The Charles City Wesleyan Methodist Church had its origins in the efforts of several Wesleyan Methodist families who resided in the city. After holding midweek prayer services for a time, the group was organized on July 17, 1913, by Rev. W. R. Emerson, Converence President. There were 14 charter members. The newly formed church worshiped in the home of Rev. W. R. Emerson, in the various homes of the members, and in the courthouse until the church was built in 1921. The first parsonage was purchased in 1938. In 1960, a new $70,000 church was completed on South Main Street on a two-acre plot. A newer parsonage was constructed in 1967, next door to the church. The tornado that destroyed the Charles City campgrounds also heavily damaged the church. Repairs were made, and new carpet, pews, pulpit funiture and a new organ were added. The church operated a Christian school for many years, which was closed in 2002. The Charles City Church graciously hosts the annual District Conference every year.
